Senator Sanders has been working to allow states to independently legalise and regulate cannabis without Federal intervention for quite some time now. He was one of the primary sponsors of the States Rights to Medical Marijuana Act in 2001 and is a firm advocate of the use of medical marijuana and the decriminalisation of recreational marijuana. He also said that as a resident of any given state, he would personally vote in favour of legalisation. Interestingly, he also voted against an amendment which if it had come into force would have led to a situation where Federal employees would have been subject to random drug tests. Of all presidential candidates, it’s probably fair to say that Senator Sanders has an approach to cannabis decriminalisation that is the most realistic and sensible.
